Every niche accumulates confident nonsense. Otoplasty's six most common claims, audited:

"It's a children's operation"

False. Cartilage is operable from ~5–6 and forever after — this practice regularly treats patients in their 30s–60s (there's a dedicated over-40 article on this blog). Adult cartilage is stiffer, techniques adapt, results satisfy famously. The only closing window is the newborn molding one; surgery has none.

"The ears just spring back afterwards"

Mostly myth, with an honest kernel. Properly executed cartilage-shaping (scoring/reshaping plus well-placed permanent sutures) holds for life; minor early "relapse" of a few degrees as swelling settles is normal and planned for. True recurrence needing revision is the exception — concentrated where technique relied on sutures alone against strong cartilage. That's a surgeon-selection fact, not a procedure flaw; our revision page covers it plainly.

"Stitch-only / incisionless fixes any ear"

Marketing outrunning anatomy. Suture-only approaches suit a specific minority: soft, thin cartilage needing modest fold creation. Deep conchal bowls, stiff adult cartilage and bigger corrections need cartilage actually addressed — our hype-vs-reality article names where each method honestly wins. Any clinic offering one technique for every ear is selling its inventory, not your plan.

"You can see the scars"

Wrong side of the ear. The incision lives in the back-of-ear groove, facing your skull — visible roughly never in daily life, even with short hair. What people notice after good otoplasty is nothing at all; that's the operation's whole party trick.

"Recovery means weeks off school or work"

Outdated. Desk work and school commonly resume in ~5–7 days (headband on), with contact sports the genuinely long wait. The tedious part is the night-band discipline, not lost weeks.

"All otoplasty abroad is a coin-flip"

Lazy where it isn't earned. The variables are verifiable from your sofa: board certifications with searchable registries (FACS, FEBOPRAS), technique breadth, real photo assessment before any quote, aftercare with a named line. Geography changes the price structure (Istanbul's 50–70%); diligence — not the destination — decides the result.
